This 60 minute Flexinar will cover basic considerations for the development and realization of antennas and antenna arrays. Fundamental definitions are covered as well as limitations pertaining to antenna size versus bandwidth, efficiency, and directivity. Important factors pertaining to the electrical properties of thin and flexible substrates are outlined as well as the possible consequences on antenna and antenna array performance.
This session is geared toward an audience that needs to understand the trade-offs their system requirements place on the antenna design engineer.
Dr. Steven Weiss
Dr. Steven Weiss has worked for the Army Research Lab since 1989 and for the last 10 years, he has lead a group of highly trained professionals in the area of antenna development for Army specific applications. In his capacity with this job, he has represented Army interests participating on a NATO panel (2012 – 2014), organized tri-service activities (2010 – 2014) and gave overall direction to the research interests of his antenna team. The innovative work of this team has let the Army to develop new products ranging from electrically small antennas, carbon nanotube antennas, and extremely low profile antennas. These products are in the development stage and will fulfill the Army’s needs for the next generation of antenna designs. In addition to providing leadership for his group, Dr. Weiss received the Army’s top Achievement award for technical excellence in 1999 attesting to his personal abilities to design and develop specialized antennas for military applications.
