Innovation Day is a celebration of progress on project work, results achieved in the Technology Hub, outcomes from Workforce Development programs, and connections made in developing the FHE manufacturing ecosystem. This invitation-only event is an opportunity for members to network, discover new technology, and meet influencers in the FHE manufacturing supply chain. It is an opportunity for government agency partners and dignitaries to learn about NextFlex capabilities first-hand, and it’s a chance for federal and local legislators to be inspired by emerging FHE technology that is improving people’s daily lives.

The day will conclude with a tour of NextFlex’s state-of-the-art Technology Hub with NextFlex technical staff. Attendees can register for a tour time between 3:00pm and 5:00pm when registering for Innovation Day.

Exhibitions

Innovation Day will include 60 exhibit tabletop demonstrations by NextFlex members and government partners showing the latest and greatest demonstrations of FHE-enabled prototypes and products. For more information click here.

Panel Discussion: Shaping our World in 2020 and Beyond

With the integration of electronics in thin, conformable, flexible devices, flexible hybrid electronics have the potential to transform how we live, work and play.  They are already changing the way we interact with the world by enabling us to do things like continuously monitor our healthcare, track our pharmaceuticals, manage important structural assets, and improve the form and functionality of a variety of critical devices essential to satellites and aerospace, RF & communications, automotive, agriculture, and soft robotics.

While the case has been made on the technology side for how and why flexible hybrid electronics will contribute to the evolution of devices that serve both the warfighter and the consumer (e.g., lower cost and weight, faster product development cycle times, environmentally friendly manufacturing, all-digital design flows), the path to broad adoption is still a work in progress. This panel will explore the societal, business, workforce, and technology transformation that is underway and how they are shaping our world in 2020 and beyond.

Emmy Award winning reporter Scott Budman reports on business and technology for NBC Bay Area. You can see his stories on the stations evening newscasts. Born and raised in Oakland, Scott has been with NBC Bay Area since 1995. He began his broadcasting career in radio as a business reporter for KMNY radio in Anaheim. He then spent some time as a general assignment reporter and business anchor/producer at the Orange County News Channel. Before joining NBC Bay Area, Scott was a reporter and weekend anchor at KEYT in Santa Barbara. Scott has won many awards including a national Iris Award for a documentary about gays in the military. He also received Golden Mike Awards from Southern California Radio and Television News Directors Association. Scott is known as the go-to voice for breaking news in business and technology in Silicon Valley. You can often hear him on Bay Area radio waves updating listeners on the latest business and tech news on NPR and Alice radio. He is a regular blogger for Forbes as well as several other online publications. In addition to his busy schedule at NBC Bay Area, Scott is a long-time volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Clara County. He also volunteers for Hip-hop chess federation offering alternatives to as-risk youths at schools like the one he attended in Oakland. He also supports the Second Harvest Food Bank. Scott has a degree in political science from UCLA. He enjoys tennis and basketball, as well as spending time with his wife and two daughters.

Dr. Azar Alizadeh
Principal Scientist
GE Research

A Principal Scientist at GE Research and a NextFlex Fellow, Dr. Azar Alizadeh leads several cross-functional teams of industrial and academic partners to develop wireless health and performance monitoring systems. The wearable sensing platforms developed by these teams enable vital signs as well as sweat and interstitial biochemical measurement capabilities and have the potential to revolutionize medicine and performance monitoring through early detection of illness, infection, fatigue and injury. Over the past decade, Dr. Alizadeh has lead multiple Department of Defense sponsored programs and has served as the co-lead on the NextFlex Human Monitoring Systems Working Group and the NBMC Governing Council.  Azar holds a PhD in physics, has co-authored 49 peer reviewed publications, holds 19 US patents/patent applications and has been an Edison Award and a Flexi Innovation Award recipient.

Dr. Patty Chang-Chien
Director of Electronics Technology

Patty Chang-Chien is currently the Director of Electronics Technology, BR&T, located in Huntington Beach, California. In this role, Patty develops and manages the execution of strategically important technology portfolio, provides contributions to the enterprise via Offload to BCA and BDS, develops technologies and executes on Boeing NeXt programs, leverages key university and global supplier investments, and captures and execute relevant contracted research. Patty joined Boeing in March 2019 from Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems, where she served a variety of leadership and technical roles with increasing responsibilities. Patty has more than 20 years of technical, program and functional management experience. Prior to joining Boeing, she last served as Director of Electronics Products & Technology at Northrop Grumman. Patty was responsible for the design, development and test of complex state of the art electronics across the NG Aerospace Systems sector. She led the center’s critical functional departments comprised of antenna, digital, and RF and mixed signal products, product engineering and power and control, with 780+ engineers and approximately 30 engineering/production labs and antenna ranges. Patty received her Bachelor’s of Science degree from the California Institute of Technology; her master’s degree from the University of California at Los Angeles; and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, all in electrical engineering. Patty is a recipient of a Northrop Grumman Distinguished Invention Award and a Northrop Grumman Innovation Award. She is also a recipient of 2009 Women of Color Technical Innovation Award and a recipient of the 2009 California Space Authority Spot Beam New Space Professional Award. Patty holds 15 United States patents and nine Northrop Grumman/TRW trade secrets. She is a Northrop Grumman subject matter expert in wafer-level packaging and her work in the areas of microelectronics, MEMS, advanced packaging and heterogeneous integration has appeared in more than 50 technical publications.

Stephen Frick
Director of Hypersonics and Advanced Materials
Advanced Technology Center, Lockheed Martin Space

Stephen Frick is the Director of Hypersonics and Advanced Materials at the Lockheed Martin Space Advanced Technology Center (ATC). In this role he is responsible for developing future discriminating capabilities in the areas of advanced materials, advanced electronics, advanced manufacturing, and hypersonic mission development for LM Space products. Mr. Frick joins Lockheed Martin after a nineteen-year career as a NASA Astronaut. He has flown two space missions on the Shuttle Atlantis, as pilot on mission STS-110 in 2002 and mission commander on STS-122, for a total of over 565 hours in space. Other key positions in support of human spaceflight included Astronaut Office Exploration Branch Chief, Orion Program Flight Crew Testing Lead, and the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School Smith/McCool NASA Chair Professor. A 1986 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he served as a naval aviator, strike fighter pilot, and test pilot retiring as a Captain in 2010. He has logged more than 4,300 flight hours in 38 different aircraft, including 26 combat missions and over 370 carrier landings. His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, and Defense Meritorious Service Medal. Mr. Frick has a BS in Aerospace Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, and an MS in Aeronautical Engineering from the Naval Postgraduate School. He is a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots.

Dr. Harry Partridge

Dr. Harry Partridge is the Ames Center Chief Technologist (CCT), and as such identifies, defines, develops and integrates new and emerging technologies for application to Agency and national goals through the NASA Space Technology Program (STP).  Dr. Partridge reports to Center management and serves as the principal advisor to the Center leadership on matters concerning Center-wide technology development and leverage.  His duties include representation on the Agency-wide Center Chief Technologist’s Council and management of the Center Innovation Fund, and he also serves as Center point-of-contact to the Office of the Chief Technologist (OCT).[/showhide]

 

 

Dr. Malcolm J. Thompson
Executive Director
NextFlex

Dr. Thompson brings over 30 years of executive experience in the display, semiconductor and telecom industries to his current role as Executive Director of NextFlex. He served as the Founder and Chairman of the US Display Consortium and was CTO at Xerox PARC. Dr. Thompson was also CEO of four startups during his career, raising over $300M: dpiX, makers of digital x-ray imaging systems; Novalux, providers of high power vertical cavity lasers; Vitex, makers of encapsulants for OLEDs, and RPC, manufacturers of touch systems for mobile products. Recent advisory roles include advisor to the National Academy of Sciences for flexible electronics, and to the Pentagon and White House Economic Advisory Council, and was appointed Technology Pioneer at the World Economic Forum in 2000 and in 2001. Dr. Thompson received a Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the University of Brighton.[/showhide]

 

 

Dr. Richard Vaia
Senior Technologist
Emergent Material Systems, Air Force Research Laboratory

Dr. Richard A. Vaia is the Senior Technologist for Emergent Materials in the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).  His goal is to accelerate research and development at the convergence of Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, Quantum Science, and Infomatics to deliver critical component technologies to address National Defense Strategy, including warfighter-machine teaming, resilient sensing and communication, and futuristic warfighting concepts.  Rich has published more than 250 articles on nanomaterials, with honors including the AF McLucas Award for Basic Research, ACS Doolittle Award, Air Force Outstanding Scientist, Air Force Office of Scientific Research Star Teams, DARPA Service Chief Fellow, and Fellow of the Materials Research Society, American Physical Society, American Chemical Society, NextFlex, and the Air Force Research Laboratory.
