Dr. James Christensen, AFRL: The US Air Force conducts hundreds of thousands of hours of maintenance every year, with many thousands of those hours requiring maintainers to enter aircraft and industrial spaces that may have multiple hazards to their safety. This Confined Space Maintenance Monitoring project has developed a system that enables real-time sensing and remote assessment of maintainers and their surrounding environments as they operate within confined spaces. The project has partnered with NextFlex to develop an FHE armband that fills a key role in monitoring atmospheric hazards. The resulting system supports prevention, detection, and intervention of health and safety hazards while reducing time and manpower needed in maintenance depots. This advancement of wearable monitoring technology offers the opportunity to provide equivalent or improved safety and performance with significant reductions in required manpower.
